Fence Installation Cost in Windsor (2026-27): Wood, Vinyl, Chain Link and the By-law Rules
Most Windsor backyard fences cost $3,500 to $12,000. Here's what wood, cedar, vinyl, chain link and aluminum cost per foot in 2026-27, how tall the City of Windsor lets you build, and how to split the bill with your neighbour without starting a feud.

The short answer
A new fence in Windsor costs about $15 to $25 per linear foot for chain link, $27 to $45 for pressure-treated wood, $35 to $65 for vinyl and $45 to $85 for cedar, installed. Most backyard fences cost $3,500 to $12,000. Windsor's Fence By-law allows up to 2.2 m (about 7.2 ft) in rear and side yards and 1.2 m (about 4 ft) in front yards.
In Robert Frost's poem, the neighbour insists that good fences make good neighbours. He didn't mention that they also make good arguments about who pays, which side faces out and whether the dog really needs it to be seven feet tall.
Here's what a fence costs in Windsor in 2026-27, what the City allows, and how to get it done without a neighbourhood cold war.

How tall can your fence be in Windsor?
The City of Windsor's Fence By-law (170-2012) sets these limits for homes:
| Where | Maximum height |
|---|---|
| Rear yard and side yard | 2.2 m (about 7 ft 2 in) |
| Front yard (including hedges) | 1.2 m (about 4 ft) |
| Corner lots, inside the visibility triangle (7.5 m from the corner) | 0.9 m (about 3 ft) |
| Beside a public walkway or alley | Up to 2.5 m |
| Swimming pool enclosures | Separate pool by-law; check before you build |
Heights are measured from the ground. Some areas, like the north side of Riverside Drive East between Drouillard Road and Lakeview Avenue, have stricter rules, so check with 311 if you're near the river.
Sharing the cost with your neighbour
- Know where the property line is. If you're not sure, check your survey or hire an Ontario land surveyor before you build. A fence 6 inches on the wrong side is a very expensive mistake.
- Talk first, build second. Agree on the material, height, style and which side the "good side" faces. Many neighbours split a shared fence 50/50.
- Put it in writing. A simple signed note with the price, the split and the contractor saves a lot of grief.
- If you can't agree, Ontario's Line Fences Act sets out a process for settling disputes over boundary fences. Call 311 to ask how it works in Windsor.
Wood or vinyl?
Pressure-treated wood
Good
- Lowest cost for a privacy fence
- Easy to repair one board at a time
- Can be stained any colour
Not so good
- Needs staining or sealing every 2 to 3 years
- Can warp, crack and fade
- Usually lasts about 15 to 20 years
Vinyl
Good
- Basically no maintenance: just hose it down
- Doesn't rot or need staining
- Often lasts 20 to 30 years
Not so good
- Costs more up front
- Fewer colour choices
- A damaged panel is harder to fix than a wood board
When to book
Fence companies are busiest from April to July. Book in late summer or fall for better availability, or get quotes over the winter and lock in a spring install date. Posts can't go into frozen ground, so most Windsor installs stop from about December to March.
How we got these numbers
Per-foot prices are 2026 Canadian ranges from published fence installation cost guides, checked in October 2026. Height limits come from the City of Windsor's Fence By-law 170-2012. No company paid to be mentioned.
